Katowice travel tips
1) See the famous Katowice ‘saucer’ — the Spodek stadium
Spodek is among Poland’s most recognisable architectural icons. It is also one of the country’s largest indoor venues, able to hold up to 11,500 people. The origin of the stadium's name is its curious shape: Spodek means ‘saucer’ in Polish. Finished in 1971, this facility witnessed countless concerts, sporting events, and exhibitions. In recent years, it has become the ‘arena’ for Intel Extreme Masters — the world’s longest-running pro gaming tour.
2) Don’t risk a beer before getting behind the wheel in Katowice
Polish laws are quite strict about drink-driving. If the level of alcohol in your blood exceeds 0.2‰, you can’t drive any vehicle. 0.2-0.5‰ may result in a driving ban and a fine. Anything above 0.5‰ leads to criminal conviction! Besides, Katowice’s traffic is quite busy, and you may need all your concentration while driving. All in all, if you plan to relax in a bar, use a taxi.
3) Have a stroll on the roof of the International Congress Centre in Katowice
The ICC building in the Culture Zone of Katowice is one of Poland’s biggest venues for exhibitions, trade fairs, and conferences. It can accommodate up to 15,000 people at once! The most remarkable thing about ICC is its roof, which functions as a public square. It is largely covered with grass, but, alas, sitting there is forbidden. Still, if you want to have a rest, the area has some curiously shaped wooden benches.
