Asturias travel tips
Walk the Camino de Santiago in Asturias to visit small towns, see vineyards, and ancient churches
A great way to explore Asturias is by hiking the Camino de Santiago. Three of the many Caminos pass through Asturias: the Camino del Norte, the Camino San Salvador and the Camino Primitivo. More than 15.000 people hike the Camino Primitivo each year. It’s one of the most tranquil Caminos to follow. While tracking in Camino de Santiago you’ll see many albergues, the most common form of lodging along the Camino. They cost around 5 to 15 euro per night and provide cheap beds in different locations. They are created specifically for pilgrims, so this is a great place to meet new people who share the same values as you do.
Go for the views over the Atlantic Sea to Asturian Santa Catalina Headland
Visit this park on your way to the old town to get an amazing view of the Atlantic Sea and the Musel Port. You can drive virtually to the edge of it and then walk the rest of the way. It’s the highest point of the city which is especially immersive on sunny days. A nice spot to take amazing photos!
Visit the Unesco World Heritage site of Cueva de Tito Bustillo to discover prehistoric drawings dating back 35,000 years
Take the 10-minute stroll inland from Santa Marina Beach to enjoy the history and art. Walking around the caves where people lived 20,000 years ago is just incredible. The air in the caves is cool, and the ground is slippery, so take comfortable shoes and warm clothes. Before taking the tour, visit the nearby museum to watch the films and see the exhibits. It will take around 1 hour, and you’ll be better prepared for the walk in the caves. Keep in mind that the tour is in Spanish and it costs around 7 euro.
