Vienna has beaten Melbourne for the first time in seven years, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit

If you wish to live in a city with the highest levels of stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure, search no more.

According to the annual ranking created by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Vienna is the most liveable city out of 140 major destinations evaluated this year. The Austrian capital has also beaten Melbourne out of the first spot after its seven-year-long reign.

The report states that even though both Melbourne and Vienna experienced improvements in liveability over past six months, Vienna managed to overcome the Australian city by a tiny difference, particularly in the category of stability.

“The two cities are now separated by 0.7 of a percentage point, with Vienna scoring a near-ideal 99.1 out of 100 and Melbourne scoring 98.4,” the report says.

Melbourne, Australia

The report states that the reason behind the increase of Vienna’s ranking lies in the improvement of stability across Europe.

“Whereas in the past, cities in Europe have been affected by the spreading perceived threat of terrorism in the region, which caused heightened security measures, the past six months have seen a return to normalcy,” says the report.

However, while two other cities in Australia – Sydney and Adelaide – managed to get in the top 10, Copenhagen in Denmark was the only other successful European city gaining the overall 9th position.

With three cities listed in the Top 10, Canada and Australia have the highest number of destinations featured in the list.

Osaka, Japan

2018’s report brings success for Japan with Osaka and Tokyo coming in third and seventh place respectively.

“Osaka stands out especially, having climbed six positions, to third place, over the past six months, closing the gap with Melbourne,” the EIU’s summary says.

“It is now separated from the former top-ranked city by a mere 0.7 of a percentage point. Osaka’s improvements in scores for quality and availability of public transportation, as well as a consistent decline in crime rates, have contributed to higher ratings in the infrastructure and stability categories respectively.”

Calgary, Canada

On the other hand, Helsinki and Hamburg, which came in ninth and tenth place in last year’s ranking, have dropped out of the list. Damascus was found to be the least liveable city.
