Domestic airfares in the United States have fallen by almost 4% year-on-year
The cost of flying in the United States is almost cheaper than it has ever been, with passengers able to pick up tickets for significantly less than in 2017.
According to new information released by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), average prices in Q1 of 2018 were 3.7 per cent lower than over the same period in 2017.
The average price of a domestic flight between January and March 2018 was $346. Last year it was $360.
The statistics also show a fall from the final quarter of last year of 1.1 per cent.
BTS uses the price at the time of purchase, including any taxes and fees. Optional services, such as baggage or priority boarding, are not included. Fares are adjusted for inflation.
Prices have been decreasing over the past 20 years. In 1999, the average cost of a domestic flight was 30.9 per cent higher – $501 when adjusted for inflation.
The most recent peak was in 2014, when the average fare was $414.
