Can I enter Hungary?

At present, Hungary is open to most countries of the world. However, please be aware that there are some COVID-19 restrictions in place. They may vary depending on the country you are traveling from.

Can I enter Hungary if I am vaccinated?

You can enter Hungary if you are vaccinated. As of December 2021, eight vaccines are approved in Hungary:

  • Moderna
  • Pfizer
  • CanSino
  • Sputnik V
  • Janssen / Johnson and Johnson
  • Oxford / AstraZeneca
  • Covishield
  • Sinopharm / Beijing

Travel documents if you are vaccinated

Hungary has special bilateral agreements with certain countries that allow travelers to be exempt from testing. You have to present a vaccination certificate only if you are traveling from the following countries:

  • Albania
  • Andorra
  • Bahrain
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Egypt
  • Faroe Islands
  • North Macedonia
  • Georgia
  • Croatia
  • India
  • Israel
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Maldives
  • Morocco
  • Moldova
  • Mongolia
  • Montenegro
  • Russia
  • Romania
  • Panama
  • San Marino
  • Serbia

If you are traveling from the EU or Schengen Area, you have to present an EU Digital COVID Certificate.

If you are traveling from outside the countries mentioned above, you have to present both of the following documents:

  • Documentation about vaccination
  • A negative PCR test result, issued no more than 72 hours before arrival

Can I enter Hungary if I am unvaccinated?

You can enter Hungary if you are unvaccinated, providing you have the papers listed below.

Travel documents if you are unvaccinated

If you are unvaccinated, please present one of the following documents:

  • Documentation of recovery from COVID-19 that is no more than 180 days old
  • A negative PCR test result in English or Hungarian language, taken within 72 hours before arrival

Who cannot enter Hungary?

Starting from November 2021, Hungary has introduced restrictions for certain travelers. You are prohibited from entering the country if you have been present in one of the following countries 14 days before arriving in Hungary:

  • Botswana
  • Eswatini
  • Lesotho
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia
  • South Africa
  • Zimbabwe

These rules do not apply to:

  • Hungarian citizens
  • Passengers with a Hungarian permanent residence permit
  • Passengers with a Hungarian residence permit that is valid longer than 90 days
  • Passengers traveling on business

Can I leave Hungary?

Currently, there are no tight restrictions on leaving Hungary. However, be aware that covid-related measures when you come back to Hungary vary depending on your vaccination status and the country you are coming back from.

Due to bilateral agreements, you are exempt from restrictions and self-isolation if you are vaccinated and coming back from:

  • Albania
  • Andorra
  • Bahrain
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Egypt
  • Faroe Islands
  • North Macedonia
  • Georgia
  • Croatia
  • India
  • Israel
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Maldives
  • Morocco
  • Moldova
  • Mongolia

Please be aware that you are obliged to perform a 10-day mandatory self-isolation if:

  • You are unvaccinated
  • You are returning to Hungary from outside the countries mentioned above

The self-isolation is considered complete:

  • After ten days
  • After receiving two negative PCR test results with at least 48 hours between them (the first test can also be performed in one of the Schengen countries, the United States of America, or Canada)

Can I leave Hungary if I am vaccinated?

You can leave Hungary if you are vaccinated.

Travel documents if I am vaccinated

Vaccinated travelers must have one of the following documents to leave Hungary:

  • The EU digital COVID certificate (to travel within the EU)
  • Another document confirming vaccination (to travel outside the EU)

In addition, please take your time to consider the requirements concerning COVID-19 tests for vaccinated travelers to your destination country in advance.

Can I leave Hungary if I am unvaccinated?

Unvaccinated travelers can leave Hungary.

Travel documents if I am unvaccinated

If you are unvaccinated, please present one of the following documents:

  • A certificate of recovery from COVID-19 (no more than 180 days old before the day of crossing the border of a particular country)
  • A negative COVID-19 test result (the relevant period and kind of test may vary, please check the requirements of the destination country)

COVID-19 situation in Hungary currently

As of December 2021, the COVID-19 situation in Hungary has become much safer compared to the previous months. Around 60% of the population has been fully vaccinated in Hungary.

Is it safe to travel to Hungary right now?

Presently, your international travel to Hungary will be safe provided you follow the main COVID-19 requirements such as wearing a mask and maintaining social distance.

Is Budapest open for travel?

Budapest is open for travelers now. Nevertheless, please be aware of local COVID-19 regulations in place:
  • Wearing masks in public places is mandatory
  • Only vaccinated visitors can visit events with a capacity of over 500 people

Do I have to quarantine if I go to Hungary?

You do not have to quarantine if you:
  • Have documentation of recovery from COVID-19 that is no more than 180 days old
  • Have a Hungarian immunity document (the EU Digital COVID Certificate is equivalent to the vaccination certificate)
  • Have vaccination documents approved by authorities in Hungary based on bilateral agreements (countries are listed above)
  • Arrive in Hungary through land borders with Serbia
Otherwise, a 10-day self-isolation is mandatory.

How do I get a health pass to travel to Hungary?

If you are traveling from the EU countries, it is recommended to install the EU Digital COVID Certificate to digitize your vaccination (or recovery) status. Travelers from outside the EU should carry their paper documents.
In addition, please be aware that Hungary is taking part in vaccinating both Hungarian and foreign citizens. You can get vaccinated and have the Hungarian COVID pass that grants access to many public attractions in the country.
