Egypt launches electronic visa for “seamless” travel

Travellers from 46 countries across Europe, Australia and Asia may now apply online to enter Egypt

The land of the pyramids, Nile, luxurious resorts and one of the world’s best football players will now be more accessible for travellers and holidaymakers as the government of Egypt has decided to introduce an electronic visa service.

People from a total of 46 countries across Europe, Asia and Australia can now apply for visa online instead of obtaining the documents upon arrival, or through the Egyptian Consulate prior to travel.

Travellers entering Egypt will now be required to hold a passport that is valid for at least eight months, with a travel itinerary and accommodation details and, a supporting letter, such as a letter from company or invitation letter for business or family visits, and the visa printout.

To obtain the e-visa, passengers have to apply at least seven days before their scheduled departure through an online form. The single-entry tourist visa costs $25 or and the multiple entry tourist visa is priced $60. The portal accepts both credit and debit cards.

“After you have completed your application and made the payment, your application will be processed. As soon as your visa application has been processed, you will receive an email informing you with the current application status,” the e-visa portal says.

Tourist visas granted using the e-visa system are valid for a maximum of three months.

“We want travel to Egypt to be as seamless as possible and in the digital age, this new e-visa system is an important step towards simplifying the process,” said Egyptian Tourist Authority UK and Ireland director, Amr El Ezabi.

“The latest tourism figures have shown a significant rise in arrivals and we hope that this trend continues as more people are encouraged to visit our diverse nation.”

The travel documents needed and visa requirements vary across the country of origin as well as country of visit. Passengers are encouraged to check their visa requirements before finalising bookings of their planned journeys.
