From today, thousands of young European adults have the opportunity to travel across the continent for free
The European Parliament has decided to boost travelling among the younger generation with a new initiative. Starting today, Tuesday, 12 June, all Europeans that will be 18 years old on July 1st can apply for one of 15,000 free tickets to travel across the European Union.
With the new measure, the European legislative body aims to decrease the growing tendencies of euroscepticism across the continent.
“I am confident that this experience will make a positive change – for the young people participating and for the communities they visit,” said EU youth commissioner Tibor Navracsics.
“Under this new EU initiative, young people will be able to travel as individuals or as a group of maximum five people. As a general rule, they will be travelling by rail. However, to ensure wide access across the continent, participants can, in special cases, use alternative transport modes, such as buses or ferries, or, exceptionally, planes,” the institution announced in a statement on Monday.
The tickets will cover the train rides only, travellers will therefore have to pay for their food and accommodation.
Applying for the free ticket will require additional tasks created by the parliament. Applicants will have to answer five questions on the EU and the 2018 parliamentary elections. They will also have to guess how the final number of youngsters interested in the program.

The successful attendees will be also expected to share their experiences through social media.
