The iPhone 18 Pro went on sale with a US starting price of $1,199. What does €1,200 do when it goes on flights instead of a new phone? If you prefer experiences over things, read on. Every trip below starts in Vienna , an airport with a long list of cheap direct routes.
Key takeaways
Six weekends in six cities: about €1,100. It fits the €1,200 budget with around €100 to spare. The flights alone cost €379, 32% of the budget.
One month in Tirana: €698 to €843. It fits easily, leaving €357 to €502 of the €1,200 for day trips to Durrës, Krujë and Berat.
Three weeks in Bangkok: €830 to €1,195. €725 to €880 for the basics, €830 to €1,195 with sights and drinks. It fits, but the extras decide how tightly.
Beds matter more than fares. Naples has the dearest of the three compared fares (€71) and the cheapest trip: beds average €54 there, against €87 in Bari and €99 in Bologna.
Every price here was checked on 5 October 2026. Flight fares come from Kiwi.com searches from Vienna in early October 2026; fares move daily, so treat it as a range, not a quote.
The short version
- Six weekends in six cities: about €1,100. It fits with around €100 to spare.
- One month in Tirana : €698 to €843. It fits easily.
- Three weeks in Bangkok: €725 to €880 for the basics, €830 to €1,195 with sights and drinks. It fits.
- The flights alone: the six weekend returns cost €379, 32% of the budget. Beds add €388 and food and transport €270 to €395.
How the math works
All prices are in euros, for one traveler. Flight fares come from Kiwi.com searches from Vienna in early October 2026. Beds for the weekends, Tirana and Bangkok are real prices from a major booking site for the same dates: the average of the three cheapest places rated 8/10 or higher close to the center, at public prices with taxes and fees included. Everything else is an estimate built from local prices and 2026 price guides, so treat it as a range, not a quote. Prices checked on 5 October 2026 and subject to change.
What is inside the budget:
- A bed for every night. A dorm bed where one was available and a private room where not.
- Food: on the weekends, two restaurant meals are priced between the low end and the middle of a city’s typical lunch range, plus three simple meals or snacks at about €5 each. On the longer trips, one restaurant meal and two simple or street-food meals a day, priced the same way.
- Local transport: the cheapest public way from the airport and back, plus a few local rides. No taxis.
What is not inside: sightseeing fees, nights out, souvenirs, travel insurance and a local SIM card.
A weekend counts as two nights and about two and a half days of food and transport. Where sources disagreed, the middle of the range was used. The least certain numbers are Bari’s lunch range (€10 to €40) and €5 for a simple meal. Fares move daily, which is exactly why the hacks at the end matter.
Option 1: six weekends, about €180 each
The rules: out on Friday, back on Sunday, direct flights, a small personal bag only, the cheapest well-rated bed and cheap local food.
Flights and beds are real prices from 5 October 2026. Food and transport are estimates. Transport counts the airport transfer in both directions, plus a few local rides.

In Sofia and Bari, the cheapest well-rated options were mostly private rooms or studios, not dorm beds.
On average the six weekends come to about €1,100, which leaves around €100 of the €1,200. Even the dearer end of the range (about €1,165) fits. Bologna, the priciest weekend, costs more than twice a Kraków one.
Kraków is only 323 km from Vienna, so a bus is a real rival there. The flight is cheap, but cheap is not always smart.
The cheapest flight is not the cheapest weekend
Compare Naples, Bari and Bologna. Bologna and Bari have fares €7 and €4 lower than Naples. But two nights in Bologna average €99 and in Bari €87, against €54 in Naples. Add the bed and Naples comes out €29 to €38 cheaper than the other two. The gap widens at the table: a typical lunch runs €5 to €20 in Naples, €10 to €40 in Bari and €15 to €25 in Bologna.
Cheap flights are not cheap trips.
Option 2: one month in Tirana
Tirana costs €176 return, direct, with a cabin bag and a checked bag, for 29 nights from 31 October. A dorm bed for the month runs €270 to €305 (about €10 a night). A restaurant lunch costs 300 to 800 lek (roughly €3 to €8.50), the airport bus about €4 each way and a monthly bus pass around €20. Prefer your own place? A one-bedroom apartment runs €400 to €500 a month. A realistic budget is €18 to €23 a day (a bed, €7 to €12 for food and about €1 for transport), so €522 to €667 for the month. November is mild and damp, so pack a rain jacket, not sunscreen.
Total: €698 to €843. That leaves €357 to €502 of the €1,200.
That leftover money has a job. Tirana is a good base for day trips, and the buses are cheap: about €1.50 each way to the beach town of Durrës, around €2.50 to the hilltop town of Krujë (castle entry is about €2) and roughly €6 each way to UNESCO-listed Berat. Add a return cable car ticket up Mount Dajti, around €10, and all four trips come to about €35.
Choose where you live, not where you land
The cheapest month-long returns from Vienna with a checked bag run from €149 to €255 across 30 destinations, averaging €193. In Tirana, the flight is only 21% to 25% of the bill. The rest is how cheaply you can live.
Venice has the cheapest month-long fare on that list, and dorm beds there cost at least three times what a Tirana bed does. For a long stay, the destination matters far more than the fare.
Option 3: three weeks in Bangkok
This is the one long-haul trip. The flight takes 42% of the budget, but the ground costs are the lowest of the three.
The fare to Bangkok is €508 return with a checked bag, from 24 November to 16 December (21 nights). It has one stop in Beijing. The journey takes 18 hours 40 minutes out and 16 hours 50 minutes back, so this is not a casual city break. Searching for flights to Thailand from your own city is the quickest way to see what the same trip costs for you.
On the ground, the three cheapest well-rated hostels for three weeks cost €95 to €125 in total, about €5 a night. The main dish in an ordinary restaurant is 100 to 250 baht (€2.60 to €6.50) and a street-food meal 40 to 90 baht (€1 to €2.35). The budget assumes one restaurant meal and two street-food meals a day, from the cheaper half of those ranges. The airport train costs 35 to 45 baht (about €1) each way and a metro or Skytrain ride 15 to 65 baht. For 21 nights that is about €215 to €370 on top of the flight.
Total: €725 to €880 before sights and drinks. Add €5 to €15 a day for temples, a few drinks and the odd tour, and the total lands at €830 to €1,195. It fits, but the extras decide how tightly.
Good to know before you book
Entry rules change, so check them before you book. EU citizens currently do not need a visa for a stay of up to 30 days in Thailand, and everyone must fill in the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing. The stop in Beijing needs no visa if the connection stays inside the airport.
The other currency: time
Money is only half the bill. Cheap weekends are cheap for a reason: three of the six return flights leave at about 6 a.m. on Sunday. A month in Tirana needs four free weeks, or a job that travels with you. Bangkok eats 35 and a half hours in transit, more than a day and a half of the three weeks.
A phone costs money. These trips cost money and time. The difference is what is left to talk about afterwards.
The upgrade nobody asked for
Phones have quietly become one of the longest-lasting things people replace, and analysts expect replacement cycles to stretch toward four years. Yet the upgrade is often not about a broken phone. A 2021 study found that phones are often replaced prematurely for socio-economic reasons, such as wanting a new model, rather than because they stopped working. A 2025 review of the scientific literature reached a similar verdict: perceived obsolescence, shaped by social pressure and marketing, often outweighs real performance decline as the main reason people replace a phone.
The repair math points the same way. The repairs cost about 10% of a new phone’s price or more, and a display up to 15% to 40%.
So the new model is often answering a habit, not a need.
Psychologists call what happens next hedonic adaptation: you get used to a thing, and the thrill fades. A 2003 study found that experiences tend to make people happier than possessions, partly because they are a more meaningful part of identity and feed relationships. People also adapt to experiences more slowly. Experiences hand you stories to tell, too. A weekend in Naples does not become obsolete when someone books a better weekend in Naples.
There is an honest catch. When an experience goes badly, it can sting as much as, or more than, a bad purchase of an object. That is why the budget above leans on cheap, low-risk trips rather than one big bet.
None of this makes a phone a bad purchase. It makes the annual upgrade a weak one.
Five hacks to stretch the same €1,200
- Search “Anywhere”. Open the Kiwi.com Anywhere search , enter your city, choose a return trip and sort by price. The weekend shortlist above started from exactly this view. Let the prices pick the destination.
- Judge the trip, not the fare. Naples has the dearest fare of the three cities compared above (€71) and the cheapest trip. Beds average €54 there, against €87 in Bari and €99 in Bologna. Add two nights before clicking buy.
- Move your dates before you move your city. Rome is €55 for a Monday-to-Monday week and €74 for Friday to Sunday. Shifting a day or two is often worth more than switching destinations.
- Filter for the bag you actually need. A small backpack is enough for a weekend, and that is all the weekend fares above included. For a month, add a checked bag in the search, so the price shown is the price paid. Every month-long fare in this article includes one.
- Set a price alert. Pick a route, switch on the alert and let Kiwi.com flag the drop. The €38 Kraków return had a single seat left at that price, so cheap fares do not wait.
So, phone or passport?
A phone gets replaced about every three and a half years. A weekend in Naples, a month in Tirana or three weeks in Bangkok stays part of the story for a decade.
Nobody has to give up the phone. Skipping one upgrade is enough. That one decision buys six weekends, a month abroad or a trip to the other side of the world.
