Bhutan tops the ranking as the best country to visit, while Salzburg is the number one city and Central Asian Silk Road the hottest region in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2020
If you haven’t decided on your travel plans for next year, here are some suggestions. For the 15th time in a row, popular publisher Lonely Planet has compiled a list of the best destinations the year ahead has to offer.
Each year, the publisher evaluates destinations nominated by their vast community of staff, writers, bloggers, publishing partners and more. From this year’s nominations, they have picked 10 best countries, regions, cities and best-value destinations.
Bhutan to become the first fully organic nation
Compiling this year’s list of Best in Travel, the publisher decided to emphasize the most resonating topic of current days — sustainability. That is why their selection aims to ensure travelers that they will have a positive impact wherever they choose to go.
Among many reasons why the South Asian country of Bhutan ranks first in the list, it is their approach towards more eco-friendly living which has caught the attention the most. In 2020, the kingdom is set to become the first fully organic nation.
Celebrating the centenary of its world-famous festival of music and drama next year, the birthplace of Mozart — the Austrian city of Salzburg — was selected the number-one city for 2020.
The second place belongs to the US capital Washington, DC, while Cairo in Egypt ranks third.
Hit the Central Asia Silk Road
To celebrate this year’s Best in Travel, Lonely Planet has decided to give a chance to its readers to explore the very best region for 2020 — Central Asian Silk Road.
The publisher will launch a competition with the major prize being a Silk Road adventure for two. The lucky contestant will win a 15-day Best of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan tour from Dushanbe to Tashkent, a $2,800 travel voucher for two to be used for return economy flights, and $345 towards offsetting their carbon footprint.
To enter, participants only need to explain why they’d love to experience the Central Asian Silk Road in 255 characters or less.
