RewardExpert, a service that points people to credit card and travel rewards schemes, analysed 3.5 million reviews for 13,410 hotels in 70 countries, with travellers coming from 83 different countries. The researchers divided the data set into groups according to the number of stars given in the reviews. The group of one- or two-star reviews generated a score of grumpiness while five-star reviews reflected the level of happiness.

With five-star reviews making up an impressively high 46.16 per cent of 70,775 reviews, Russians were found to be the happiest feedback givers in the world. 36.61 per cent of their reviews had four-star ratings, giving a total of 82.77 per cent positive reviews. Only 4.99 per cent of reviews left were one- or two-star, the lowest percentage in the world. No grumps in Russia.

Serbians came in second position with 42.49 per cent out of 2,351 reviews being five-star and only 7.10 per cent being one- or two-star.

The percentage of five-star reviews given by Lebanese tourists was slightly higher than those from Serbia – 45.69 per cent – but the higher level of negative feedback placed the country to third.

The country that tends to give the highest percentage of positive reviews is Israel, with 51.24 per cent, followed by Georgia, with 49.38 per cent, and Belarus, with 48.97 per cent.

While Spain has the reputation of being a relaxed country full of sunshine and siestas, their tourists seem to be not easily satisfied. Out of more than 100,000 reviews written by Spanish travellers, only 31.06 per cent were five-star while 11.73 per cent were one- or two-star.

Irish tourists gave a larger amount of positive feedback – 41.27 per cent out of 53,429 reviews – but they also gave the highest number of one- or two-star reviews. The percentage of 11.91 of negative reviews is the highest in the world and combined with other reviews makes the Irish second grumpiest tourists.
