From luxury to the very basics. Plan your travels in one of India’s wildest region with our top five places to stay

You know you’re in India as soon as you set foot over the border. It is a wild country, and Arunachal Pradesh is one of its wildest states. It is full of the most incredible nature and the foothills of the Himalayas that climb to 7,000 metres.

Untamed can mean that finding somewhere to lay your head for the night is difficult. You can take your chances and just arrive in the state, hoping that someone will take pity on you. Or you can plan ahead with our top five places to stay in Arunachal Pradesh.

Tiger Todo

The Hotel Todo is where you should stay if you’re looking for a touch of luxury. The art deco hotel, with an Indian flavour of course, in Itānagar has mountain views and is near to the Pakke Tiger Reserve.

Pakke Tiger Reserve holds one of the largest untouched tropical forests and is full of tigers (obviously), elephants and birds.

The Hotel Todo is just across the border from Assam, so grab a perfect cuppa and hike through the tea fields while you’re there. It is on the pricier side of things for India, but it should be worth it.

Bumbling Bumla

The Bumla Inn in the mountain town of Tawang is the perfect spot to hit the trail across the Sela pass and through Arunachal Pradesh. It’s slap bang in the middle of two national parks and the Chinese border.

The inn describes itself as being Japanese style. Although, if I’m honest, I’m not entirely sure what that means. It’s on the cheap and cheerful side of things, but you just need a bed to rest your weary legs after a few days walking, right?

Mooch into the Moomsie

Like the Todo, the Hotel Moomsie is a comfortable place to stay in Arunachal Pradesh’s capital, Itānagar. It doesn’t quite have the eye-catching style of the Todo, but it may be more to your taste.

The Moomsie is close to Ita Fort, a fourteenth century Sutiya brick castle and one of the most important historical sites in the region. It’s also right beside the Gompa Centre for Buddhist Culture. This is one of the most stunning temples you can lay your eyes upon.

Pop into the Pybbs

Located right beside the Indira Ghandi Park, slap bang in the centre of Itānagar, is the Hotel Pybss. This is as modern a hotel as you can find, with a dark, well-stocked bar.

The rooms are large, comfortable, and well furnished. There’s car hire, and it’s said to be the best value out of all the hotels in this list.

Relax in Siiro

The Siiro Resort is located in one of the most welcoming parts of the world. Siiro is full of festivals – like the Friendship Festival, where you wander in and out of people’s houses eating food and drinking tea, while shamans work their magic and there’s a tightrope competition in the centre of town.

Siiro is an idyllic town, surrounded by the paddy fields at the base of the Himalaya’s. It’s perfect for hiking, and the pinewood lodge has the friendliest and most helpful staff in the world.
