EU travel restrictions due to the coronavirus

Summary: Schengen member states enforce border restrictions within Europe.

The EU Commission has presented guidelines on border measures to prevent the coronavirus from spreading, and maintaining the flow of goods. The EU Commission has proposed to:

  • Introduce green lanes/fast lanes giving priority to essential transport to keep the mobility sector going, and ensure economic continuity
  • Temporary restrict non-essential travel to the EU for the next 30 days
Travel restrictions don’t apply to long-term EU residents, family members of EU nationals, diplomats, essential staff (doctors, nurses, care workers), researchers and virus experts, frontier-commuting workers, and people transporting goods.
