Connections covered by the carriers

The carrier covers your connections if they're booked together under 1 carrier reservation and have the same reservation number (PNR).
You can see the PNR on your e-ticket and later on your boarding pass.
The carrier guarantees the transfer between such connections, which is the opposite of a self-transfer.

What will happen with my baggage?

If you have checked baggage, you only need to check it in before the first flight. The carrier will automatically transfer it between the flights, and you'll pick it up at the final destination of the connection.

What if there's a delay or a cancellation?

The carrier will cover you in case of disruptions related to their reservation:
  • If the first flight gets delayed, the second flight usually waits with the departure. The carrier can also put you on the next available flight. 
  • If one of the flights gets canceled, the carrier usually offers an alternative or a refund of the whole connection. 
  • If you need to wait at the airport because of a disruption, they might provide you with hotel, food, or drinks compensation.

Will I need to leave the airport?

You usually don't need to leave the airport's transit zone and don't need a transit visa to catch your connection with the same PNR. However, there might be exceptions, e.g., if you need to transfer to a different non-connected terminal.

Can I take only 1 of the flights?

If you don't board the first flight, you usually can't take the second flight because the carrier deems the whole reservation as missed.

However, you should be able to take only the first flight if you travel without checked baggage or if it's part of a return trip. It's because the carrier usually transfers your baggage to your final destination.
