Melilla travel tips
Don't miss visiting the fortressed area called Melilla la Vieja or Old Melilla. It was built during the 16th and 17th centuries. It takes about 3-4 hours to walk around and enjoy museums (archaeological and military ones), a church, battlements, drawbridges, and several caves and tunnels dating back to Phoenician times. The four-sectioned fortress was recently restored, and this area was declared a Historic-Artistic Site. If you’re into history, you can take a tour around this area to better understand what you are seeing.
The Berber tribes of Morocco's northern regions have influenced the cuisine here in Melilla. This food is characterized by combinations of sweet and sour and heavy use of spices. Typical dishes include harira, a hearty, strongly-spiced meat-and-vegetable soup; the typical Moroccan stew tagine; and meat kebabs. Try Morocco food in El Rincón — Casa Sadia bar, ordering lamb pinchos cooked on an outdoor barbecue, a lamb tagine, snails and some croquetas de jamón. It’s better to reserve the table, especially in the evening, as sometimes you need to wait around 30 minutes to get a seat. The bar is open from 13:00 to 15:00 and then from 21:00 to 01:00 every day.
One of the highlights of Morocco-Spanish cuisine is green tea with mint, which is great for quenching thirst after a long walk. Moreover, every cup of Moroccan mint tea comes with fluoride, calcium, magnesium, copper, and selenium and boosts immune function. You can try Morocco green tea at Cafetería Los Arcos, next to the Church of the Sacred Heart.
