Stornoway travel tips
Stock up with food in Co-op and Tesco supermarkets in Stornoway
When buying products in Stornoway, remember about two of the best supermarkets in the city — Co-op and Tesco. But going to Co-op on Cromwell Street, bear in mind there is no parking. However, there is a pay and display car park in Perceval Square just across the road. Whatever you buy, add to your list locally made Stag Bakery products. This is an amazing local bakery manufacturer that offers high-quality bread or ready-to-eat rolls.
Your visit to Stornoway will not be complete without trying black pudding
Walking on Church Street in Stornoway, visit MacLeod & MacLeod cafe and order traditional black pudding (traditional Scottish sausage). Many cafes serve this dish, but MacLeod & MacLeod is one of the best ones according to locals’ opinions.
Make time to walk to South Beach in Stornoway in the evening to see a touching memorial
Going to South Beach from the Stornoway Harbour, you will see the beautiful and, at the same time, poignant Iolaire Memorial. Dedicated to the greatest maritime disasters, the “Sheol Nan Iolaire” shows the outline of the H.M.Y Iolaire ship with 280 wooden posts, one for each man aboard the ship. 79 posts are painted white as a visual indicator of the survivors. As the tide comes in each night and covers the memorial, those markers light up blue apart from those 79 posts depicting survivors, which turn red.
