Islay travel tips
1) Hear how sand sings on the beach of Islay
To seclude near the sea, head to the beach on the Port Ellen side or so-called “Singing Sands”. Concentrate and try to hear their singing. The tiny silica grains on the beach “sing” when the wind blows through the minuscule tunnels, and you can hear the sounds similar to how a glass bottle whistles when you blow across the top.
2) Spend time with a family in An Tígh Seinnse pub on Islay
Despite having a pub format, An Tígh Seinnse on Islay is the perfect place to dine with a family. Go there after 12:00 to 21:00 (but only till 16:00 on Wednesday and Tuesday) to relax with a view of the seals basking on the rocks. The menu is various, but pay special attention to the crab claw salad, the apple and cinnamon tart and Kilchoman organic malt whisky.
3) On Islay, prefer fat bikes or e-bikes to simple ones
Appeal to the Islay E Wheels rental and take a bike to see all the impressive details on Islay. When choosing, bear in mind that your trip around Islay with its narrow winding roads will be much easier on fat bikes (bikes with wide tyres) or e-bikes.
