Cheap flights from Amsterdam to Kirkwall from £348

When in Kirkwall, walking down Broad Street, you will see the beautiful St Magnus Cathedral. Nobody knows who built it since It was founded in 1137, and the building took 300 years to complete. Just see it, and you will understand why it took so much time with all its red circular columns and multi-coloured textile hangings. If you are lucky, you can enter inside. But usually, it is closed for services, funerals, etc.

If you search for something melt-in-your-mouth, go to Brig Larder Market in Kirkwall. Start your shopping by observing stalls with vegetables and cheese and buy something for a picnic. Then, if you cook on the trip, find the butchery at the rear, locals praise their beef and chicken.

No wonder that travellers want to sleep under the stars in Kirkwall. Book a campsite at Wheems Organic Farm, an eco-lodge on a 200-year-old working farm only a 15-minutes drive from Kirkwall. In return, you will get good views of the surrounding cliffs and, depending on the time of year, the Northern Lights. Do not buy food in advance, cause here you will find a store with all the necessary food. Also, when you do not need some food anymore, it is common not to throw it away, but to leave it on the special stall, so that somebody else can use it.
