Syracuse travel tips
Visit a Landmark
During your stay in Syracuse, try and take in a show at the Landmark Theatre. The theatre was built in 1926 and is a listed building and is certainly opulent. Much marble was used in its construction, and soft furnishings include tapestries and a Tiffany chandelier. When the theatre opened, it was showing silent movies, but one year later, in 1929, it was showing ‘talkies.’ In 1967, it closed and was going to be demolished, but enthusiasts clubbed together to buy it, and it re-opened in 1976 — manned by volunteers.
Take a walking tour to explore all the churches
The city of Syracuse has long been the home of many different nationalities with different religious traditions and beliefs. This fact is clearly portrayed in the local religious architecture. Most Christians in the city are Catholic, but there have also been numerous Irish, German, Italian and eastern European settlers in the early 20th century. There are dozens of different churches in Syracuse — including several Eastern ones.
Have you ever seen upside-down traffic lights?
When the Erie Canal was being built, many Irish builders were living and working in Syracuse. They lived in a community in a certain part of the city. They didn’t like the traffic lights because the red (which they said represented Britain) was above the green colour of Ireland and gave this excuse for regularly smashing the light. The city officials grew tired of repeatedly replacing the red light and agreed to turn the lights upside down to keep the Irish workers happy!
