The strange name of this museum (Les Abattoirs — ‘the Slaughterhouse’) is a tribute to the history of its buildings. It has more than 2,000 works, including those by such renowned artists Brassai, Arman, Dubuffet and Matta. Among the most notable works of the museum’s collection is the stage backdrop “The Remains of Minotaur in a harlequin costume”. This giant (13m by 8m) work of art was created by Pablo Picasso and Luis Fernandez in 1936.

The museum has more than 4,000 sculptures and paintings from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. The art connoisseurs will appreciate 14th-century sculptures of Rieux and the Romanesque capitals (topmost parts of the columns) of Saint-Etienne, Saint-Sernin and Daurade. However, you can also see works by later artists (painting by Rubens, sculptures by Rodin). Another remarkable thing is the building itself. Constructed in 1309 as an Augustinian convent, it was converted into a museum during the French Revolution in 1793.
