Budapest travel tips

1) While in Budapest, visit the largest synagogue in Europe

In Hungary, there is a tradition not to clink glasses. It started in 1848 when the Austrian Habsburg dynasty stopped the revolution in Hungary. Austrian soldiers celebrated this event by clinking glasses. Since then, the Hungarians have vowed never to clink glasses, and you should avoid the usual “cheers” if you don't want to offend the locals.

2) Visit the Church of St. Matthias, visible from many points of Budapest

St. Matthias Church is one of the main churches in Budapest, built in the 14th century. Many Hungarian kings were crowned here, and the building is an excellent example of European eclecticism, as different architectural styles are intertwined in it.

3) Take a ride in a retro bus from the Soviet past if you're tired of walking around Budapest

Budapest has a historic bus ring line 109. It starts from the very centre of the city (the Deák Ferenc tér M stop), running only on Sundays from 10:00 to 17:20. Tourists are offered a ride on retro Ikarus buses (including a convertible one).
