Get your bearings by taking a good walk around the area. Downtown has really attractive Neoclassical and Gothic buildings, many of which have been restored. As you walk along the streets, try and imagine life 100 years ago when the streets were waterways. The Erie Canal ran right through the heart of the city along what is now called ‘Canal Street.' If you find yourself at the University of Syracuse, make sure you have time to find the Tree of 40 Fruits. The tree has been grown by Sam Van Aken as an experiment in science and art that was begun in 2008. During the spring and summer, the tree is covered in more than three dozen different types of edible fruit, including cherries, plums, peaches, and almonds. The tree was created by grafting the buds of 40 different fruit trees onto a single tree.

It is thanks to the many women who joined the suffragette movement that women in many countries enjoy their rights. Harriet May Mills was an influential feminist, and her home in Syracuse can be visited. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Harriet May Mills helped build one of the largest suffragette organisations in the United States. She travelled all over the country fighting for women’s rights and was well-known on the political scene. She was the first female State Hospital Commissioner.
