Edinburgh travel tips
In Edinburgh, you can use both British and Scottish banknotes
Scotland, as part of the UK, uses the pound sterling as its official currency. However, in Scotland, banknotes are printed with their local personalities – for example, missionary Mary Slessor or poet Robert Burns. These banknotes are considered completely legal, and you can use them throughout the UK. Likewise, banknotes printed in England (with William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, etc.) are also accepted in Scotland.
You can drink water right from the tap in Edinburgh
Water in the UK is among the top 10 cleanest in the world. You can safely drink water directly from the tap. So take a reusable water bottle with you to save money. In Edinburgh restaurants, you can also order tap water for free.
Climb up to Edinburgh Castle, which sits atop an extinct volcano
The top of the rock has been inhabited since about 800 BC, and the castle itself was mentioned for the first time in the XII century. A ticket inside the castle costs 19 euro. Edinburgh Castle houses the Skunk Stone and the Crown of Scotland, so you will definitely love the exhibit. But you can also just walk around and enjoy the views.
