Edinburgh travel tips
The old city centre in Edinburgh is called Town. It is the medieval part of Edinburgh with its Royal Mile, which runs from Holyrood Palace. The New Town district is the second half of the historic centre. But it is not “new” actually as it was built in the 18th century. Now it’s home to business centres and fashion stores.
The Royal Mile Market is small but colourful, located in a former church that is open 7 days a week. Here you can buy various hand-made souvenirs, local designer accessories, natural Scottish cosmetics, and sweets. Everything that tourists usually bring from Scotland is in one place.
The last three chapters of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code are set at Rosslyn Chapel in Edinburgh. This chapel is richly decorated with sculptures and frescoes depicting Biblical subjects, the times of the Knights of the Templar Order, and the Masonic Society. It is quite a popular place among tourists, although it is paid – the entrance costs ca. 17 euro.
