Situated a short distance east of the city is Green Lakes State Park, which covers 2,000 acres and numerous hiking trails. It is the park’s two lakes that attract many of its visitors. The lakes are ‘meromictic’ lakes. The lakes have basins that are unusually deep and steep-sided, and it is this that causes the phenomenon. The different layers of water in a meromictic lake never mix. In most lakes, the water does get mixed so that the surface and deep waters are exchanged. Often the lower levels of water are highly saline and denser than the upper levels. These lakes are characteristically a strong blue/green colour, and the upper layers of water are crystal clear.
