The magnificent building was constructed in 1915 by the architect Leonardo Rucabado Gómez. A huge collection of 42,000 books and more than 1,000 manuscripts once belonged to Spanish and philologist Menéndez Pelayo. The library is beautiful inside with its vast hall, filled from floor to ceiling with wooden bookshelves, wrought-iron balconies and carved columns.
