Charleston travel tips
The market was established in 1807 and was originally a place where slaves went to buy their provisions for the plantations. As well as clothing, leather goods and regional souvenirs, the market has a very special stall known as ‘the basket ladies.’ This stall has been in operation since the market began and was originally run by West African women weaving baskets from palmetto leaves, grasses and other local materials. Their knowledge of basket making has been handed down through the generations — what an excellent souvenir!
This is definitely a fun afternoon/ early evening pastime, and The RiverDogs — the local team — will always welcome extra support! The games are held at the Joseph P. Riley Jr Park, and after a Friday evening game, there are always fireworks.
