Flying out of Zanzibar is straightforward and well connected, with flights from Zanzibar reaching key hubs across East Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. The island’s main gateway, Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, keeps departures focused and easy to navigate compared to sprawling mega hubs.
Zanzibar’s single primary airport streamlines your departure while still offering a healthy mix of regional shuttles and long haul options, so you can head to safari gateways, beach cities, or major intercontinental hubs with minimal fuss. A modern terminal opened in September 2020 and was designed for up to 1.5 million passengers per year, giving the airport a fresher feel and more space for today’s growing demand. Whether you are plotting weekend flights from Zanzibar, cheap one way flights from Zanzibar, or an ambitious multi city journey, it’s a smart place to start.
Zanzibar’s route map spans short hops within East Africa, onward links to the Gulf, and seasonal direct services into Europe, making it ideal for both quick escapes and longer itineraries.
For short haul, Dar es Salaam sees very frequent service, with roughly 34 to 39 flights per day on some schedules, and Nairobi is typically about 1 hour 40 minutes nonstop. Mombasa has multiple daily options in many seasons, while Addis Ababa and Entebbe are around 2 hours 35 minutes when flown direct. Johannesburg clocks in at about 3 hours 50 minutes on direct services. For Gulf and Türkiye connections, Doha is about 5 hours 55 minutes, Dubai about 5 hours 30 minutes, Muscat about 5 hours 30 minutes, and Istanbul about 7 hours 45 minutes, including options on carriers such as Turkish Airlines. Direct Europe services often cluster in peak or winter sun seasons. Typical examples include Paris at about 8 hours 10 minutes, Frankfurt about 9 hours 5 minutes, Zurich about 8 hours 55 minutes, Milan and Rome about 8 hours 40 minutes, and Madrid about 9 hours 15 minutes. All schedules and durations are examples and subject to change.
Why travelers choose these routes short hops feed safari and business trips, Gulf hubs open global connections, and winter direct flights to Europe are ideal for sunshine escapes. If you are hunting last minute flights from Zanzibar to a major hub, these patterns are useful starting points.
The best time to book flights from Zanzibar usually aligns with seasonal demand and a bit of flexibility. Prices tend to rise in the dry season peaks of June to October and December to February, and can soften in March to May and November.
Aim to start watching fares 4 to 6 weeks before departure for many routes, then pounce when your target price appears. Set a tracking safety net with Set a Price Alert so you get notified the moment fares move, instead of refreshing your browser. If your plans are open ended, Kiwi.com’s Travel Hacks Travel Hacks can reveal savings through self transfer, hidden cities, or throwaway tickets where appropriate, and the Kiwi.com Nomad Search Tool Nomad Search Tool can string together three or more stops and find the cheapest overall order for a big trip. Combine these tactics with shoulder season travel for the best odds of cheap flights from Zanzibar. All availability and pricing are subject to change.
Zanzibar is served by one main airport, which keeps logistics simple while offering a solid mix of domestic, regional, and long haul services. Here is how to navigate it and the airlines flying from Zanzibar.
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport sits in Zanzibar City and is the island’s primary international gateway. A new terminal opened in September 2020 and was designed to handle up to 1.5 million passengers annually. Facilities typically include duty free shops, restaurants, and lounges, with standard services for international travelers. For international flights, arriving at least 3 hours before departure is commonly recommended to allow time for check in and security.
Getting to and from the airport is straightforward. Taxis wait at the official stand and it is wise to agree the fare before you ride. Many hotels run prebooked shuttles, which can be the most comfortable option if you have bulky luggage. Local dala dala minibuses are the cheapest option but can be crowded, allow extra time if you choose them.
You will find a mix of full service and budget or leisure carriers at ZNZ, from regional operators to long haul airlines. Regional domestic and short haul services connect to cities across Tanzania and East Africa, while long haul and Gulf carriers link onward to global networks. On Kiwi.com, the self transfer hack can combine separate airlines into one itinerary even when they don’t cooperate. For extra reassurance, add the Kiwi.com Guarantee. It includes automatic check in, 24 7 instant chat support, and Disruption Protection that covers your trip if carrier changes stop your journey in its tracks, helping you secure replacement options or pursue refunds. Terms and availability are subject to change.

I have to say I was a bit skeptical about kiwi. but I can say that I am pleasantly surprised by the information, either in the application or through support via messages. although I had an extra paid support service and I don't know how it works with the basic service, but it worked well this way. I had a few questions and issues that were resolved and answered. you even alerted me to the flight delay of 20 minutes, which had not yet been seen even at the airport. what I find a little annoying are some packages that I don't need in 90% of the time, but they are presented on the website in such a way that I can't do without them and that I actually have no chance of flying without them.
