Katowice travel tips
Go to the shooting location of the Witcher — Ogrodzieniec Castle near Katowice
The scenic castle, built in the 14th century, is an hour’s drive from Katowice. It commands some stunning views from its location at the highest point of Kraków-Częstochowa Upland (504m). During its long history, the Ogrodzieniec Castle was partly ruined. However, it still presents a picturesque sight. The fans of the popular Netflix series, the Witcher, may recognise its walls and towers. While planning your trip, check the online calendar. Some interesting events, like Medieval folk dancing or knight tournaments, are held here.
Come inside the Cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice
This 20th-century cathedral is one of the largest in Poland. Its unusual exterior may remind you of a government building, but don’t let yourself be confused. Come inside, and you won’t be disappointed. Pay attention to miners’ patron Saint Barbara sculpture overlooking an altar of coal and a monument to lost miners. The large dome houses five bells, the largest of which weighs 3.5 tonnes.
See the historic building of the Silesian Parliament
Built in 1929, this government complex in Katowice was among Poland's largest administrative buildings at the time. Its total area is more than 6,500 square metres, and the length of its corridors exceeds 6 km! As the name suggests, this building was the Silesian Parliament's seat during a brief period of the region's independence before WWII. It still houses several offices of the Silesian Voivodeship.
