Charleston travel tips
Explore Fort Moultrie
If you are not one for relaxing on the beach, Fort Moultrie at Sullivan’s Island is interesting to visit. It was the first fort on Sullivan’s Island and was built from palmetto logs. In 1776 the fort was involved in a nine-hour battle when its guards were trying to stop the advance on Charleston by nine warships. The fort proved amazingly resilient because cannonballs from the ships simply bounced off the wooden logs of its exterior.
Relax aboard a sailing boat
The Schooner Pride is an elegant sailing yacht with 84 foot high masts. There are various trips you can enjoy, including one to see the dolphins, a sunset cruise or an evening one in the moonlight — they are all relaxing and romantic.
Relax in Mrs Whaley’s garden
Emily Whaley, who was known as ‘Cheeka’ to her friends, was a lively octogenarian when her memoirs Mrs Whaley and her Charleston Garden, were published in 1997. The book sold surprisingly well and even made it onto the New York Times bestseller list. In her book, there are a number of thoughts about her beloved garden, which is situated at 58 Church Street. The garden is open to the public on Thursday — Sunday and is open all year round.
