Lyon travel tips
In Lyon, purchase tickets from vending machines or at tobacconists
You may also buy a ticket from a bus driver, but it will cost you an extra — €2.20 instead of €1.90. Vending machines are on all metro/tram stations and some major bus stops. Check the screen for the small flags in the bottom right-hand corner to select the language. Note that there is also a booklet of 10 tickets, costing €17.60, as well as 24, 48 and 72-hour tickets (€6.20, €12, and €16).
Read the inscriptions carefully at Lyon’s gas stations
English-speaking tourists may be confused by the peculiarities of the French language. At the gas station, remember that “essence” means gasoline, while “gasoil” is diesel. Make sure you are pouring the right fuel into your tank!
Lyonnaise sellers expect a ‘hello’ from you
In some countries, entering and leaving the shop without saying a word is OK — but not in France. Greet the seller (“bonjour”) when you enter a shop. If the person seems busy, a simple nod will do. And make sure to say “au revoir” (goodbye) when you leave.
