Like in many other cities and towns all over Spain, most shops are closed in Santander on Sunday. Note that some places of interest might be closed as well or work only in the morning. Luckily, the gorgeous coastline is always open for exploration.

The magnificent building was constructed in 1915 by the architect Leonardo Rucabado Gómez. A huge collection of 42,000 books and more than 1,000 manuscripts once belonged to Spanish and philologist Menéndez Pelayo. The library is beautiful inside with its vast hall, filled from floor to ceiling with wooden bookshelves, wrought-iron balconies and carved columns. Such devices are considered illegal in Spain. If the police spot one in your car, you’ll have to pay the fine of €500. It doesn’t matter whether the device is on or off. Respect the speed limits and drive safely!
