Granada travel tips
Enjoy spectacular interior of the Basílica San Juan de Dios in Granada
Built in the 18th century, the basilica has magnificent Baroque decor. Each inch of its vast interior gleams with gold and silver, while the dome rises 50m in the air. Such renowned artists as Diego Sánchez Sarabia, Tomás Ferrer, Corrado Giaquinto decorated the ceilings and side chapels with frescos. However, the centrepiece of its interior is an extraordinary gold altarpiece in the main chapel. Use audio guides to learn more!
Visit Corral del Carbón — the oldest Arab building in Granada
Corral del Carbón was built in the 14th century by Yusuf I as a coal yard. A couple of centuries later, it was adapted for stage performances. Corral del Carbón consists of an entrance pavilion and a courtyard encircled by craft rooms and galleries. If you are lucky, you can run into a flamenco show there. Note that the Corral del Carbón is open from 9:00 till 20:00, and the entrance is free.
Try Piononos — the hidden gem of Granada cuisine
Pionono is a pastry, originating from Santa Fe, a small town near Granada. A local baker of Italian origin created it to honour Pope Pius IX (sounds as ‘Pio Nono’ in Italian). To make this pastry, a thin layer of sponge cake is rolled into a small cylinder and soaked with various rum or fruit syrups. Then it is topped with custard cream. A must-try for any sweet tooth!
