Granada travel tips
Initially, Alhambra was founded as a small fortress on the Roman ruins in the 9th century. It was rebuilt and expanded 400 years later by the Nasrid Dynasty, who ruled the area at the time. Alhambra occupies 10.5 hectares of land and is protected by 2 km of fortress walls. It has some great examples of Islamic architecture along with 16th-century and later Christian buildings. Don’t miss the beautiful Generalife gardens, which are located nearby.
Remnants of ancient Arab baths aren’t all Granada has to offer. There are some operating hammams in the city as well. Usually, they have a steam room and bathing pools. Visitors can use special black soap and exfoliate their skin. One of the most popular hammams in the city is Hammam Al Andalus, situated in the old city.
This walkway beneath the famous Alhambra palace was laid out in the 17th century. It begins at the high Chirimias bridge. The small old building nearby has a tall square tower and the shields of Granada, decorating its facade. Until the nineteenth century, the Paseo de los Tristes was a popular place for festivals and feasts. The fountain in the middle of the walkway dates from 1609. A beautiful place for a stroll!
