Find cheap flights over Boxing Day from Canada

Boxing Day is one of Canada's biggest holidays — and one of the busiest travel days of the year. Whether you're escaping the winter cold or taking advantage of the long holiday weekend, booking your Boxing Day flights early is the best way to lock in great fares. Canadians love heading south to the Caribbean, Mexico, and the US, making December 26th a prime departure date. Use Kiwi.com to compare flight deals from Canadian airports and find the best prices for your Boxing Day getaway.

How to find cheap Boxing Day flights from Canada

How to find cheap Boxing Day flights from Canada

Start searching for Boxing Day flights at least 6–8 weeks before December 26th. Fares from Canadian cities tend to climb sharply as the holidays approach, so early booking is key. Use Kiwi.com's flexible date search to compare prices across nearby dates — sometimes flying out on December 27th or 28th instead of the 26th can save you hundreds. Set up price alerts to track fare drops, and consider departing from alternative airports if you're near a major hub. Connecting flights through Toronto or Montreal can also unlock lower fares to popular sun destinations.

Why Boxing Day is a great time to fly

Boxing Day marks the start of the post-Christmas travel rush in Canada. Many Canadians have time off through to New Year's, making it an ideal window for a warm-weather escape. Airlines often release promotional fares for January and February travel on Boxing Day itself, so it's also a brilliant day to book future trips. The combination of holiday sales and the desire to flee Canadian winters makes Boxing Day one of the most exciting travel shopping days of the year. Whether you're flying to an all-inclusive in the Caribbean or visiting family out west, Boxing Day flights connect you to where you want to be.

Cancun, Varadero, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay top the list for Canadian Boxing Day travellers looking for sun and sand. Florida — especially Orlando and Fort Lauderdale — remains a favourite for families. Phoenix and Scottsdale in Arizona attract those seeking warm, dry weather. For domestic travellers, Vancouver and Victoria offer mild coastal winters, while Montreal and Quebec City are perfect for a festive city break. Wherever you're headed, Boxing Day flight deals from Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal offer plenty of options.

Best time to book Boxing Day flights from Canada

The best time to book Boxing Day flights from Canada is mid-October to early November. By then, airlines have published their holiday schedules and early-bird fares are available. Waiting until December means competing with millions of other Canadian travellers for limited seats, which drives prices up. If you're flexible with your destination, last-minute deals do appear on Boxing Day itself — but these tend to be for less popular routes. For guaranteed savings on top destinations like Cancun and Cuba, book well in advance and use price comparison tools to track the lowest fares.

Frequently asked questions about Boxing Day flights

Everything Canadian travellers need to know about booking Boxing Day flights, from pricing tips to the best travel dates.

Is Boxing Day a statutory holiday across all of Canada?

Boxing Day is a federal statutory holiday in Canada, but its observance varies by province. Ontario, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island mandate it as a paid statutory holiday. In provinces like Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec, it is not a statutory holiday in the same way — employees may or may not receive the day off, depending on their employer. However, retail Boxing Day sales mean that foot traffic and travel are high everywhere in Canada on December 26.

What are the cheapest warm-weather destinations for Canadians at Christmas?

Cuba (Varadero, Cayo Coco, Havana) consistently ranks as the most affordable all-inclusive destination for Canadians over Christmas, largely because of the volume of WestJet and Sunwing charters. Mexico (Cancún, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta) is slightly more expensive but offers more flexibility. Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) is a middle-ground option. For the budget-conscious traveller, Jamaica is often 20–30% cheaper than Dominican Republic for the same level of resort.

Do Canadian airlines have Boxing Day flight sales?

Yes, Air Canada, WestJet and Sunwing all launch Boxing Day sales at midnight or early morning on December 26. The deals cover January, February and March departures, not the Boxing Day week itself. Discounts of 20–40% off regular fares are common. These sales are best for planning a February or March break. Sign up for airline newsletters and check the Kiwi.com deals page on Boxing Day morning to catch offers.

Is it worth buying a Sunwing or Air Transat package vs booking separately?

For Cuba, Mexico and Dominican Republic, Sunwing and Air Transat vacation packages (flight + resort + transfers) are almost always cheaper than booking the components separately. These operators have negotiated bulk-rate contracts with resort properties that individuals cannot access. If you want a city like New York, Miami or London rather than a beach resort, booking a flight on Kiwi.com and hotel separately is usually more flexible and competitive.

What documents do Canadians need to visit Cuba?

Canadian citizens need a valid passport (6 months validity recommended), a tourist card (tarjeta del turista), and proof of travel insurance. The tourist card is often included in Sunwing and Air Transat package prices; if booking independently, it can be purchased at the airline check-in desk for around C$25. Travel insurance must cover medical treatment in Cuba, and it is legally required for entry. Canada does not require a visa for Cuba for tourist stays under 90 days.

How busy is Toronto Pearson airport on Boxing Day?

Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is one of North America's busiest airports on Boxing Day, with a combination of departures to sun destinations and post-Christmas family travel. Expect longer-than-normal queues at check-in and security, particularly in the morning. The GTAA recommends arriving at least 3 hours before an international departure. The Union Pearson Express train from Union Station runs regularly on Boxing Day and is the most reliable way to reach the airport.

Can Kiwi.com help me find flights from smaller Canadian airports?

Yes. Kiwi.com covers flights from secondary Canadian airports like Edmonton (YEG), Ottawa (YOW), Halifax (YHZ), Winnipeg (YWG) and Kelowna (YLW), and uses Virtual Interlining to combine a regional hop to a major hub like Toronto or Vancouver with an international connection. This often produces lower total fares than booking through a single carrier. The Kiwi.com Guarantee protects your connection if the domestic leg is delayed.

Is Boxing Day a busy day at airports?

Boxing Day is moderately busy at airports, though typically less hectic than the Friday before Christmas or December 23. Many travelers depart for post-Christmas holidays, so arriving early and checking in online is recommended.
