Charleston travel tips
Join a culinary tour
What better way to learn about a city than through its food! There are five different culinary tours you can join, including one on sustainable seafood. All include plenty of samples to try! Some of the local dishes include ‘grits,’ which is a type of cornbread, fried green tomatoes, fried oysters and ‘Hush Puppies’ — which are deep-fried balls of cornmeal that taste perfect as a side to seafood.
Take in a show
The Dock Street Theatre has existed for 400 years in the French Quarter of the city. The first performance took place there on 12 February 1736. The original theatre was burnt down, but the current theatre was built nearly 100 years ago. The city’s first opera performance also took place there. Today, the theatre has a varied programme, including plays, opera, and other musical events.
Pretend you are a firefighter!
The North Charleston Fire Museum is a great place to visit as it has 20 beautifully restored fire engines to admire and has a number of interactive displays and even a traditional firefighters’ pole for visitors to try sliding down!
