Most people in Katowice can speak English. However, in language issues, they tend to be a bit proud and prefer to talk in their native one. You are unlikely to be denied help if you ask for it in a foreign language, but you will be overwhelmed with hospitality and an open-armed welcome if you address locals in Polish. It's not a big deal to remember such phrases as “czesc” (chech-sh-ch, hello), “przepraszam” (pshe-pra-sham, excuse me), “dziekuje” (gien-koo-ye, thank you,) and in return to get sincerity, a ton of useful information and maybe even some kind of treat.

Poland doesn’t lack petrol stations. However, the quality of fuel is not the same everywhere. Locals suggest that small stations offer low-cost fuel of a dubious quality. To be on the safe side, use the stations of large companies, such as BP, Shell, Orlen, Lotos, Statoil, Neste, etc.

A picturesque Moszna castle is located a 1.5-hour drive from Katowice. Built in the 19th — 20th centuries, it combines Baroque, Neo-Gothic, and Neo-Renaissance styles. The park and the pond nearby add to the beauty of this building. The former residence of industrial magnates is now a hotel and a tourist attraction. 19th-century Pławniowice Palace, which lies halfway from Katowice to Moszna castle, may seem less striking but is still worth a visit.
