You've probably heard of the Spanish siesta, when the locals close all their shops and cafes and relax, waiting out the hottest hours. Indeed, from 13:00 to 17:00, Seville freezes, and you are unlikely to find at least one open restaurant or cafe at this time.

In Seville, drinking is allowed in public places, which is great news for a budget traveller. Many people buy alcohol in stores (beer from 0.5 euro) and go to the Alameda de Hercules square, enjoying warm evenings and playing street musicians.

The 37-meter tower Torre del Oro was built in the 13th century on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. Nobody knows now for what reason the tower was named Golden (Oro). According to one version, the name comes from the golden colour of the tiles covering it. According to another legend, it’s because the gold brought from the New World was kept in the tower. Now the tower houses a small Maritime Museum, where you can see ancient navigational instruments. You can also climb to the observation deck. The ticket price is 3 euro, free on Mondays.
