Barcelona travel tips

1) Learn a few words in Spanish or Catalan to communicate with Barcelonians

Both languages are official in Barcelona. Surely, in a city visited by millions of tourists each year, many locals understand English. However, the people of Catalonia are proud of their language and culture, so your attempts to speak Catalan will be appreciated. Start with Bon dia (‘bon dee-ah’ — Hello), Merci (‘mehr-see’ — Thank you), Adéu (‘ah-deh-ou’ — Goodbye), Si us plau (‘see oos plow’ — Please).

2) Go to Barcelona Aquarium — one of the largest aquariums in the world

Aquarium Barcelona houses more than 11,000 water-dwelling animals, representing over 450 species. Its Oceanarium-water tank is 36 metres in diameter and 5 metres deep. It has an 80-meter glass tunnel, allowing you to see its inhabitants clearly. The visitors with diver certification can even dive there and swim among sharks! Barcelona Aquarium is a nice place to visit, especially to wait out a spell of bad weather.

3) Climb the Spanish Civil War fortifications to get a great view of Barcelona

The Carmel Bunkers is located at the top of Turó de la Rovira in the Carmel neighbourhood. During the Spanish Civil War (1936 — 1939), anti-aircraft guns were installed here (no bunkers, however). Having climbed to this place, you can get a 360º view of Barcelona from the height of 262 meters!
