Knoxville travel tips
Admire the view from the Sunsphere
This iconic 81-metre high hexagonal tower is topped by a huge golden sphere and dominates the skyline. Built for the 1982 World Fair, the sphere gets its golden colour because each pane of glass is 24-carat gold — and costs $1,000! The Observation Deck gives an incredible 360º view of Knoxville.
Visit the most popular public park
Lakeshore Park is located near the University of Tennessee and fringes the Tennessee River. The park covers 185 acres of land. There are views to enjoy of the river and the Great Smoky Mountains and a walking trail around the perimeter, sports fields, and for children, there are two fun playgrounds, too. In the winter, Lakeshore is a popular place for sledging. During the summer months, there is a Farmers’ Market every Friday.
Watch your child have fun
Fort Kid is a fenced small play park for children that is within easy walking distance of the Sunsphere. There are towers, swings, monkey bars, and a cave, and they have all been sensitively made and painted to blend with the local environment.
