The fact that Santander is located in Spain and has numerous beaches doesn’t mean that the sea (the ocean, to be more precise) is always warm. In May-June, the average water temperature is around 15-18°C. Even in August, it won’t get warmer than 23°C. Use special websites to check the water temperature before your trip. Still, even if the readings aren’t to your liking, sunbathing and walks along sandy beaches remain among the options.
Bilbao, the largest city in the province of Biscay, lies 100km from Santander. You can easily get there by car, bus or train. The city is famous for its Guggenheim Museum — an architectural marvel housing modern and contemporary art. Besides, you can get acquainted with the Basque culture and explore Casco Viejo — the Old Town of Bilbao. If you have a couple of days to spare, visiting Bilbao is a must!
