The entire Silesian region is famous for coal mining, iron, and steel production. As Katowice moves away from heavy industry, overgrown slag heaps and derelict factories become an indispensable part of the landscape. That industrial heritage is partly converted into art venues, like Silesian Museum or Wilson Shaft Gallery. Some objects are preserved as tourist attractions in their own right, for example, Zinc Rolling Mill or the former workers' district of Nikiszowiec. Take your pick!

Taxis are a great way to move around the city, but be careful while choosing your cab. It’d better be explicitly marked and have a rate card and a counter. A trip with some ‘privateer’ driver may cost you a pretty penny! You can also call some reliable company or make an online order. If you wish to pay with a credit card, check in advance if that is an option.

For extended trips across The Upper Silesian metropolitan area, the ZTM company offers a non-personalised urban travel card (ŚKUP). It can be purchased at the ZTM Passenger Services in the main train station or next to the Rynek square in Katowice. The ŚKUP card is valid for a week and costs 44zł or almost 10€. Note that the fee for one ride is 3-5zł or about 1€.
