Boise travel tips
Be impressed by magnificent birds
The World Centre for Birds of Prey is a fascinating place to visit to see eagles, vultures, hawks, and owls, as there are 800 pairs of these birds in the area. There are 20-minute live bird presentations given by trained handlers to describe the birds’ characteristics and their conservation status. The Discovery Room is geared to children with plenty of hands-on educational activities, and there is also a short nature trail to enjoy. The centre is open March — November, Tuesday — Sunday 10.00 — 5.00 p.m. The bird shows are held at 10.30, 12.00 noon, 2.00 p.m. and 3.30 p.m.
Learn about flying in yesteryear
Warhawk Air Museum is run by a couple who restores World War II aircraft in their spare time, and their enthusiasm for aviation history can be contagious! As well as numerous aircraft on display, there is also plenty of memorabilia to admire — all lovingly restored and maintained. The prize exhibit is a “Boise Bee” North American P-51C Mustang.
Climb the Black Cliffs
Since the 1960s, the Black Cliffs have been a ‘must do’ for climbing enthusiasts. The Black Cliffs are a series of towering columns of volcanic basalt rocks, that are challenging to climb and provide excellent views of the River Boise below. The cliffs are situated close to the river on the way to Lucky Peak Reservoir. The advantage for climbers is that the basalt naturally has ideal handholds and footholds. The first climbers used the cliffs for Alpine training and devised a number of different routes to the top, which cater for different abilities.
