Madrid travel tips
Conventionally, Madrid consists of two zones – explore both of them to get a feel for the city
Conventionally, Madrid is divided into two tourist zones – the old traditional centre (the Puerta del Sol square and Gran Vía street, as well as the surrounding areas of the 17th century) and the new quarters (the cosmopolitan Castellana, the bohemian Chamartín, and the austere Salamanca districts). Tourists are more likely to settle in the first zone, but the second is also worth seeing to admire Madrid in all its manifestations.
If you love underground hangouts, check out La Tabacalera in Madrid
La Tabacalera is a cultural centre in an old abandoned tobacco factory in the Lavapies area. Here you can find the weirdest creative people. If you like graffiti and cellars, then this is the place for you. La Tabacalera also hosts many masterclasses, from longboarding to ballet classes.
Most cafes in Madrid start serving breakfast from 10:00, so don’t wake up too early
Many cafes in Madrid serve breakfast from 10:00 until 14:00. Some establishments have a separate breakfast menu, including hot dishes and desserts, but a standard Spanish breakfast is a bun with coffee. In any case, waking up early to have breakfast in Madrid is not worth it – the locals go to bed after parties only after 04:00, so breakfasts are late here.
