The Krzywy Domek in Sopot is one of the most unusual shopping centres you’ve ever seen
The Krzywy Domek (Polish for 'crooked house') is an unusually shaped building in Sopot, a 20-minute train ride from Gdansk. It was erected in 2004 in the middle of the Monciak walking street. The curved walls and windows make it look like a reflection in a distorting mirror. The Krzywy Domek bears some resemblance to the Dancing House in Prague, though it is much smaller. After marvelling its facade, you can visit the shops inside.
Take a water tram from Gdansk to Hel Peninsula
The 30km-long, narrow Hel peninsula is famous for its beaches, resorts, and surfing camps. You can get from Gdansk to the town of Hel on its tip by car or by train in about 2 hours. However, a three-hour sea voyage may be preferable. The ticket will cost you around 10 euro. Note that the cruises are available from May through September. When in Hel, visit Seal Sanctuary, Fisheries Museum in a 14th-century church and climb the 41-meter high lighthouse.
When in Gdansk, watch for your personal belongings
The Tri-city, which includes Gdansk, is generally safe. However, Baltic resorts attract both tourists and petty criminals, including pickpockets. Store documents and valuables in secure pockets and don’t leave them in outer clothing casually lying around! Beware of strange people asking you questions or bumping into you. Also, avoid leaving valuables or bags in your car.
