The Westerplatte peninsula is well-known as the place where the opening shots of WWII were fired. In September 1939, at the start of the German invasion of Poland, Wehrmacht troops assaulted its Polish garrison. Today Westerplatte is a memorial site and a historical park. You can still see shelled bunkers and other burnt-out ruins of military fortifications. The pivotal Guardhouse Number 1 has a small museum, while there is also an exhibition outside.
