Gdańsk travel tips
From the top of St. Mary’s church, you can enjoy an amazing city view. It looks as if gingerbread houses are scattered all over the city. The building is a gigantic gothic church in Gdansk. By the way, it’s the highest brick cathedral in Europe. Only 400 steps separate you from the top. No pain, no gain!
The Westerplatte peninsula is well-known as the place where the opening shots of WWII were fired. In September 1939, at the start of the German invasion of Poland, Wehrmacht troops assaulted its Polish garrison. Today Westerplatte is a memorial site and a historical park. You can still see shelled bunkers and other burnt-out ruins of military fortifications. The pivotal Guardhouse Number 1 has a small museum, while there is also an exhibition outside. Note that these museums are seasonal.
The Malbork Castle, built in the 13-14th centuries by the Teutonic Knights, a classic example of a medieval fortress. The trip from Gdansk will take you about an hour. This structure is one of two World Heritage Sites in north-central Poland. The outermost walls enclose 21ha of area, making it four times bigger than the famous Windsor Castle. Even if you are not a history enthusiast, you are likely to be impressed by its Gothic grandeur.
