Attend St. Dominic’s Fair, the major summer event in Gdansk
St. Dominic’s fair usually starts on the last Saturday of July and lasts till the middle of August. It is the most significant and famous summer event in Gdansk and one of Poland’s oldest fairs. The streets are crowded with musicians, dancers, street artists in funny costumes. Shopkeepers present their unusual hand-made goods. Food stalls show off a variety of treats. The whole city is celebrating. You are welcome to join!
Learn about the history of the Polish Navy at Gdynia Naval Museum near Gdansk
The place is a must-visit for naval history fans. The Gdynia Naval Museum has a great collection of sailing ship models. In its armoury, you can find anti-aircraft guns, mines, and torpedoes. Some of the latter were in use at the turn of the 19th and 20th century! A separate exhibition is devoted to the history of the Polish Navy. An outdoor section includes some planes and artillery. You can see both 18th-century cannons and plenty of military equipment from WWII.
When in Gdansk, visit the nearby village of Szymbark
Szymbark, a small village 50 km from Gdansk, has several sites which make it worth visiting. The most popular of them is an Upside-Down House. It is a real wooden building, standing on its ‘roof’ and fully furnished inside. Szymbark also has a couple of objects from the Guinness Book of Records. You can see the longest board cut from one tree, which is 46.5 meters long! The largest piano in the world is also here, measuring 6 meters in length.
